Durango, located in the southwest corner of Colorado, is nestled in the Animas River Valley of the San Juan Mountains. Not only does this prosperous community have many recreational activities, Durango also has numerous cultural, educational and economic opportunities. Several local sites have been recognized for their role in Durango's history including historic 3rd Avenue and the Strater Hotel. Located along Main Avenue, Strater Hotel was built in 1887 in a Victorian-style of architecture. Throughout the years, the hotel has maintained its charm and original character, while expanding to add a restaurant, bar and a variety of live performances.
The historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge (D&SNG) railroad is another popular attraction. Started as a way to transport silver and gold ore out of the San Juan Mountains, the D&SNG is now a passenger train used by residents and guests. Annual events related to the D&SNG are scheduled throughout the year including the Narrow Gauge Convention and D&SNG RailFest. Residents in the Durango area are also just a short drive away from spas, hot springs, ski resorts and ranches that offer such activities as skiing, rafting, golfing, hiking, horseback riding and camping. No matter what time of year, there is something for everyone.
