Bayfield has become an escape for many professionals and families. Located about 18 miles east of Durango, residents prefer the peaceful seclusion of this town - the "Heart of the Pine River Valley."
Originally named "Los Pinos," Bayfield was settled in the 1870s by a group of ranchers. The community was renamed in 1898 by one local rancher and was incorporated in 1906. Since that time, the population of this close-knit community has grown to more than 1,800 people. Residents and visitors have access to parks, library and a community center. This year marks the town's centennial, and special events are planned throughout the year to celebrate the Bayfield's 100th birthday.
Bayfield is surrounded by mountain ranges and desert plains that provide endless opportunities for backpacking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, camping, snowshoeing and skiing. Boating, skiing, swimming and canoeing are only a few activities available at Lake Vallecito, located 10 miles north, and Navajo Lake, which is about 18 miles southeast of Bayfield.
